Dr. Tarou joined the department in 2005. She describes her research interests as diverse and continually developing. Her primary resarch interests are animal learning / cognition and animal welfare. The majority of her resarch has focused on the environmental issues that may contribute to the quality of life and promotion of the psychological well-being of animals housed in captivity. She has studied the effects of aging on the behavior and management of great apes, stereotypic or abnormal behavior and social relationships in great apes and giraffe. She has also studied foraging and cognition in golden lion tamarins, giant pandas, and giant hornbills.
