Dr. Bahrick has been on the faculty of the department since 1949 and
has been a full professor since 1956. He has also held guest professorships
at Kenyon College, The Ohio State University, Florida State University,
the University of South Florida (Tampa), the University of Marburg (Germany),
and the University of Hamburg (Germany). Dr. Bahrick received research
grants from the National Science Foundation and National Institutes of
Health over a 25-year period (1956-80) to investigate human memory. He
currently holds a five-year grant for $530,000 from the National Science
Foundation to investigate the maintenance of knowledge throughout the
human life-span. This grant provides opportunities for students to become
paid research assistants part time during the academic year and full time
during the summer. Dr. Bahrick's other achievements include a Fulbright
Professorship in Germany (1959-60), Ohio Wesleyan's Bishop Welch Meritorious
Teaching Award (1971), and the Helen Whitelaw Jackson University Professorship
at Ohio Wesleyan (1976). He is the author of over 50 professional publications
and many chapters in specialty books on the topic of memory. His research
is frequently cited in introductory psychology textbooks and has been
the subject of articles in popular magazines such as Psychology Today
and Science News. Dr. Bahrick holds the university's only research professorship
and recently received national recognition by being selected as the sole
recipient of the American Psychological Foundation's 1994 Teacher of the
Year Award.
