Slow Network Follow-up Procedures

As you requested at the RILO meeting, I contacted Tony Smith today about the poor performance of the network. Tony informed me that Info Sys (IS) is monitoring traffic on the Internet. He acknowledged that after 12 noon the network tends to be slower and this is due to the number of people who are using the network. Although the OWU population is finite in terms of 1850 students and 128 faculty, each year more and more students bring PCs to campus. Also, there is more use of the computer labs on campus by all constituency groups, which means more of a strain on the network. Tony stated that a second T1 line was installed and that IS is controlling Napster. Tony said that the IS staff continues to try to manage the network to prevent a complete shut down. At this time, Tony believes the two T1 lines are sufficient, but OWU needs to invest in the backbone of the network.

If you are dealing with poor response time, Tony asked that you e-mail him and let him know the problem(s) that you are experiencing. Your e-mail to Tony should indicate the application that you are using, your location, and the time of day.
