Command AntiVirus for Windows Enterprise

If you are not using this version of virus protection, contact the Information System’s Help Desk and have it installed.  Make sure the CSAV Update feature is automatically keeping your virus protection up-to-date.

Microsoft Office Tools on the Web

http://office.microsoft.com/default.aspx

This site includes a link to “Office Update,” which keeps your MS Office software such as Word, Excel et al current.  A Template Gallery and examples of clip art, sound, and animations can also improve your work.

Microsoft Windows Update

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

It is important to make sure “Critical Updates & Services Packs” are current.  Your computer may be configured so that these updates are automatic.  Even if your critical updates are automatic, you need to periodically check this site and install the “Windows XP” and “Drivers Updates” that you need.

Defragging & Hard Drive Maintenance

It is important to keep your computer tuned up by regularly (monthly) doing the following procedures:

My Computer à Local Disk (C:) à right click your mouse à click on “Properties”

1)      On the “General” tab run “Disk Cleanup”

2)      On the “Tools” tab run “Error-checking” then choose both “Automatically fix file system errors” and “Scan for & attempt recovery of bad sectors” [This operation will require restarting the computer]

3)      On the “Tools” tab run “Defragmentation”

Spycatcher

http://www.spychecker.com/home.html

An important site for downloading anti-spyware tools.  For example, under “Anti-Spy Tools” you will find Ad-aware, a privacy tool that scans your memory, registry, hard, removable and optical drives for known data-mining, aggressive advertising, and tracking components.

Take a “Look at all categories.”  I have found Pop-Up Stopper Free Edition under “Popup Blockers” a useful way to eliminate browser pop-up advertising windows.

Atomic Clock Sync

A useful utility to keep your PC with the exact current time.
