Technical Services Minutes
August 26, 1999
Present: Carol, Barbara, Judy, Theresa, Kim
1. Procedure Manual: Deadline is September 15th promptly
2. Budget: Theresa is still waiting for the budget to be released.
Once the budget is released, a meeting will be held to dispense allocations
to all assigned areas.
3. Hiring: Theresa is expecting to have a decision on staffing for
Technical Services by the time of the first Faculty Meeting. Updated
information will be given as it is received.
4. YBP: A profile has been provided by YBP: We are now awaiting the
budget release, so that the library can move ahead with activating
the plan with YBP.
5. Gift Books: Gifts are still being received by the library, but
they are in a low priority status for processing. Working without
a Collection Development person to facilitate these gifts has prompted
this response to this situation.
6.MUB/Stone House Books: These stored Deweys will be relocated back
into the library onto the second floor. Badly damaged Deweys will
not make the pilgrimage back to the library, they will be properly
put to rest.
7. CRC: This project is going very well due to the collaborative
efforts of library staff and CRC staff. The CRC holdings are now being
incorporated into CONSORT, which will allow records to be viewed on-line.
Restrictions do apply to the CRC books, can only be checked-out by
OWU students and faculty. Two of the replaced computer terminals from
Technical Services will be sent over to the CRC library to further
enhance the new online services. A barcode reader is already on order
for the CRC library. Bernard has agreed to provide circulation training
to Jan (CRC staff).
8. Supplies: Now is a good time to get those supply orders in while
the money is available.
9. Communicating: From Theresa's perspective, there is a level of
trust and responsibility placed upon each staff member to communicate
to her things that will have potential for immediate or delayed implications
for the library. As Director of the library and the Acting Head of
Technical Services, Theresa would like firsthand knowledge of internal
and external activities that impact the library.
10. Computer Training: Theresa encourages all library staff to take
full advantage of the computer classes that are being offer by Information
Systems. To be better able to maximize the use of the new computers,
taking computer training classes would be a plus.
11. Retreat Follow-up Survey: Marsha and Deb will be working on this
survey. Information is forthcoming.
12. Committee on Meetings: The goal of this committee is to minimize
library meetings. A report will be given at the September Staff Meeting.
13. Information Literacy and Honors Course: This semester Danielle
has been granted a leave to teach a course on Information Literacy.
Carol Holliger and Marsha will be temporarily filling in for Danielle
at the Reference desk.
14. New Faculty Orientation: Out of the 15 new faculty, 11 attended
the reception for new faculty held by the library. This event was
a success and will be held again next fall.
15. New Library Home Page: Theresa is encouraging everyone to take
some time to view the library's home page. Faculty appear to like
the fact that media can be borrowed from CONSORT and Ohio Link.
16. Ohio 5 Gov Docs Historical Cataloging Project: The Ohio 5 directors
decided to use the balance of the Mellon grant to keep Ellen overseeing
the gov docs project for another year. If Ellen's position is continued,
Beeghly would be expected to contribute $5000 - 6,000.00 for cataloging.
Ohio 5 is also seeking new funding for an extension of the Gov Docs
Historical Cataloging Project. If the project is renewed Ellen will
be asked to stay on for another year.
Staff Updates :
Carol is working on the Union List and is expecting it to be released
soon. Carol is also conducting a Periodicals Usage Study that will
allow statistical information to be compiled. This was done as a result
of request from the Faculty.
Judy is working with the Gov Docs and the Docs Historical Cataloging
Project. Implementing the CRC Project and hiring new students.
