RILO Meeting Minutes
March 19, 1999
Present: Paul Burnam, Deborah Carter Peoples, Danielle Clarke, Bernard
Derr, Tom Green, Carol Hallenback, Joy He, Carol Holliger and Marsha
Zavar.
I. Reference
Tom announced that we have received one complaint on the Suggestions
& Comments board regarding the furniture move in Reference. He
emphasized that we will be making refinements as we go along based
on what is and isn't working. He would like us to keep him apprised
of comments that are received.
Paul asked that the remaining "Possible New Reference Orders"
sheets be returned to him as soon as possible. We have $670.00 left
in the Reference budget line for this fiscal year.
II. Information Literacy
Danielle announced that she had not been accepted to Immersion "99
(Institute for Information Literacy summer program). She and Theresa
worked diligently to prepare an exciting application packet, but there
were MANY candidates and FEW openings!
Danielle thanked everyone for assisting her with the Marysville High
School visit during Spring Break. The program was well received by
the students and Danielle indicated that she did some college "recruiting"
during her presentations.
III. Online Services
Paul spoke about the faculty database workshops to be held this coming
Monday evening, March 22nd. Danielle, Tom, and Paul will each have
a room downstairs and will teach two different databases. Joy will
teach her two databases upstairs at the GPO terminal. Bonnie has arranged
for refreshments and Chuck will be assisting with signage.
Paul shared news from the OhioLINK lead implementor's meeting on
3/11/99. The new OhioLINK staff password is iLaLion. The Digital Media
Project (OhioLINK's version of Digital Initiative) should be up and
running in the Fall. It will include sound and text as well as images.
Some of the OhioLINK libraries are contributing images for the project.
Every six months there will be a new Dataware release. Release 3 will
be out in July. Two changes are being considered--making the search
history link more visible and making local holdings display first
instead of OhioLINK holdings. Six new Dataware databases will be available
soon--Humanities Index, GeoRef, Continuing Women's Issues, Political
Science, Criminal Justice Abstracts, and Business & Industry.
Titles from 3 new vendors should be available on the EJC later this
year--APS,Springer-Verlag and Kluwer/Wiley. It is Paul's understanding
that we will have access to all journals put out by each of these
publishers. Negotiations are still underway with Sage, Blackwell,
and the Royal Chemistry Society.
If you are having database connectivity problems and cannot connect
to one of the OhioLINK databases, search the web at www.ohiolink.edu/CGI-BIN/whereami.pl
in order to identify your level of browser and IP address. Give Paul
this information and he will notify OhioLINK. If you experience a
database failure "after hours", there will now be a technician
available at the following cell phone number: (614)906-3600.
The Library Home Page focus groups have all been held. Only two of
the five students showed up for the student group, but their comments
were helpful. The administrative and faculty groups also provided
useful information.
IV. Public Services
Tom distributed a draft copy of the Friends of the Libraries user
guide. He asked us to get back to him with our comments. Initital
reaction from the group was very favorable.
V. ILL
Joy and Marsha introduced the new online ILL forms and asked for
our feedback. The student's completed form will come to the reference
e-mail account. We will need to print it out and verify as we do with
the paper form prior to giving it to Marsha.
It was suggested that a larger dialog box might be included on the
periodical form to allow a patron to cut and paste their citation
directly from a database. It was decided that the eligibility statement
from the paper form ought to be included on the online form so that
there is no confusion as to who may use the service. We also need
to indicate after the information regarding cost of the article that
the student gets to keep the photocopy. So far, we do not know of
any plans to publicize this service, but there will be a link to it
from the library home page.
VI. Other Business
Carol Holliger brought up the issue of the financial management assignment
which students have been working on this week. Many more articles
have been cut out of the Wall Street Journal this week than were cut
during the Fall Semester. A copy of the assignment was found in the
Periodicals area. The instructor asked for original copies of articles
or very good photocopies. There was no statement on the assignment
sheet reminding students not to destroy library property. Joy agreed
to follow up with the instructor(s) regarding this continuing problem.
Since the assignment involves browsing rather than the use of indexes,
it is not feasible to put the newspapers on Reserve.
Carol Holliger also asked about student access to CONSORT and OhioLINK
from the students' dorm rooms. Yesterday, a student thought he needed
to tel-net to get in, but he had no tel-net icon. It was the consensus
of the group that we should advise the students to use the web version
of CONSORT by typing http:www.owu.edu/~librweb or http://140.141.130.3
as the URL.
VII. Next Meeting
The next meeting will be held on April 30th, 1999 at 9:00 A.M. Paul
will be responsible for setting the agenda, and Marsha will take minutes.
Today's meeting adjourned at 10:00 A.M.
Respectfully Submitted,
Carol Holliger, Scribe
