RILO Meeting Minutes
January 7, 1999
PRESENT: Theresa Byrd, Danielle Clarke, Deborah Carter Peoples, Tom
Green, Carol Hallenbeck, Joy He, Carol Holliger and Marsha Zavar.
I. Information Literacy
Danielle reported that OhioLINK has received the $50,000 AT&T
grant for creation of web-based tutorials (which includes unique-to-each-campus
features). The 5 Colleges' Information Literacy Committee plans another,
larger grant for faculty workshops on incorporating Information Literacy
into the classroom. Danielle has applied for one of 80 places in "IMMERSION
'99," the first-ever summer week- long Institute for Information
Literacy workshop/conference in Plattsburgh, NY.
II. Periodicals
Carol Holliger reported that print issues of the New York Times and
Times of London magazine sections have been accumulating for a couple
of years. It was decided to retain the magazine sections for the same
length of time as the actual newspapers are kept; the New York Times
will be discarded when the microfilm arrives, and the Times of London
will be discarded after 2 weeks.
III. Reference
Joy reported final preparations for our new e-mail reference service,
tentatively scheduled for implementation February 3rd. A sample home
page form is being routed; Joy outlined publicity plans; there was
brief discussion of the importance of timeliness and correct answers.
Marsha distributed several articles on e-mail reference service; let
her know if you want your own copy. Joy outlined procedures for use
of EUDORA mailboxes for participating librarians.
Carol Holliger distributed the latest version of the reference statistics
form. It was approved by the group, and will be implemented beginning
January 11th at the Reference, Circulation and Periodicals desks.
Joy reported that the Economics Dept. has agreed to the cancellation
of the print versions of Dun & Bradstreet and Standard & Poor's
from standing orders.
A sign has been ordered for the new name of our Opinion Poll: "Suggestions
& Comments."
IV. On-Line
ProQuest Direct and the CD-ROM version will both be cancelled to
eliminate redundancy. We will return the CD-ROM discs to UMI. A link
will be created on the library home page to ProQuest Direct ("name
has been changed to Periodical Abstracts"). PsycLIT will be cancelled
as of March 30, 1999; PsycINFO is now partially available (from 1967
to the present); GeoRef will be available next fall. BIOSIS will be
available later this semester through OhioLINK; Cambridge Scientific
Abstracts (which includes Biological Abstracts) will probably be dropped
even though it has served well.
Tom distributed draft lists of "Web-Based Databases" which
are available now or will be during the upcoming semester (for campus
access only). Sugggestions were made for clarifications. This will
be distributed as a booklet to all faculty and available as a handout
at Beeghly, as well as displayed on the library home page. Tom also
presented a sample sheet/instruction form for DISCUS, an experimental
web-based discussion board originally designed at Hope College. RILO
members are asked to join in the discussion about Daily Bulletin publicity
for new web-based databases.
There was discussion of switching/purchasing computer equipment for
various library locations.
Joy announced that home access to Brittanica Online cannot be provided
because student ID checks are required. Web access through the GPO
workstation is in progress. Joy presented proposed guidelines for
circulation of Government Documents and reported briefly on the Five
Colleges Government Documents Original and Historical Cataloging project.
Carol Holliger reported that OhioLINK will provide new print volumes
of the MLA Bibliography as part of our contract; we have yet to receive
1997 or 1998. Dialog will not support the DOS version of DialogLINK
as of January 1st; Carol will cancel the standing order with Ebsco
(saving c. $2000). It is not urgent to move to the Windows version;
we need new equipment first.
Paul Burnam will continue to serve as "lead implementor/contact
person for trials of new services" and inform us of new databases
available. [We need to find out what "lead implementor"
means.]
V. Interlibrary Loan - no report.
A copy of Paul's revised draft of "Telecommunications/Network
Failure Guidelines" will be routed.
In the Reference area at the end of the meeting, Joy demonstrated
changes to the library home page.
Next meeting: Friday, February 12, 1999, at 9:00 a.m. [NOTE TIME].
Joy will take minutes.
