The Directors report:
Have Laptop-will travel : we will wait until next Fall semester to
get started with Remote Site Reference service. With JSTOR, e-res,
netlibrary, we have enough to tinker with in the coming months. We
can use the Summer to better define what we want to do with the Remote
reference concept. Theresa intends to alert the faculty at the first
faculty meeting of the semester of some of these new developments
and urges all liaisons to contact faculty members individually and
offer to teach them JSTOR at their convenience in their offices. Tom
has some newsletters with good information on JSTOR that could be
helpful to faculty members.
The Scout Report Website is worth a look : http://scout7cs.wisc.edu
Read the article on Intellectual Freedom made available. It reaffirms
ALAs support of IF.
The 5 colleges discussion about a shared storage facility continues.Crowding
in our periodicals and Govdocs areas could make it useful to us.
Reference:
Reference will purchase an updated version of Petersons
Guide to Graduate Programs. The library and Career Services alternate
buying a new set.
An update of the RandMcNally Commercial Atlas and Marketing Guide
is desired. At Toms suggestion, we will wait for the edition
that will incorporate the 2K census data.
13 reference titles on Choice cards received 3 or more signatures.
3 have already been ordered, the rest of the titles will be ordered
from the Reference book allocation.
Theresa ordered the CD version of the Encyclopedia Africana.
The print version will be ordered as well.
Library workshops follow-up:
A total of 92 students of unknown mix participated this term. Most
participants had been required to attend. A few showed up on their
own. The one student to attend the Hayes Hall workshop was very inquisitive
and active in the training. We will continue our work to make workshops
meaningfull , timely and accessible to students. Evaluations will
be developed for future workshops.
A meeting will be called by Paul to discuss the contents and the
timing of a library workshop for library student assistants.
Online:
Britannica Online may be pulled from OhioLINK databases.
Not much interest was voiced by the Economics department for FIS
Online.
OhioLINK is also having difficulties with the MLA Bibliography.
The Modern Language Association informed OhioLONK that it will cease
to supply raw data for the online version of the MLA International
Bibliography. OWU faculty who are MLA members are being asked
to lobby for OhioLINK at their annual meeting later this month.
New datebases are being added constantly by the OhioLINK group. Some
will be "pay to play". Many we cant afford.
Beilstein Crossfire is due to be availablel in Feb, on the
initiative of the 5 colleges. Denison and Oberlin are interested.
We reviewed options of what to do with the weekly YPB slips after
funds are expanded. It was decided to keep receiving them as they
might alert us to material we may want to purchase with other funds
or put on a wish list.
Tom distributed a handy hand-out on How to help someone use a computer.
Our databases can be used by patrons doing research at home by dialing
in. Http://auth.ohiolink.edu
simulates remote access.
Joy will look into simplifying the search for pathfinders on our
web page.
Joy mentioned changes she made on the web pages such as the addition
of database categories and individual Library catalog links. She will
add two free Galenet dbs: Literary Index and Contemporary Authors..
Information literacy:
The 5 colleges IL group met in November.
Danielle enjoined us to check out the tutorial they are developing.
Danielle has applied to talk about her terms teaching project
at LOEX.
GovDocs:
Joy has completed the biennial survey mandated by the Superintendent.
She gave us a breakdown of the formats distributed by the FDLP: 35%
on microfiche; 40% on line; 20% on paper; 10% on CD.
Joy gave such a glowing report on an OhioLINK training session she
attended about searching tips and techniques, that everybody wished
they had gone. Joy passed on some tips she learned but the clamor
is for more.
ILL:
The OhioLINK ICS committee is working on a manageable way to let
patrons place requests for Journal articles from their search station.
Serials:
The Wilson tapes are being rearranged and have not been loaded yet.
In 2000 we will be provided with 117 titles through JSTOR (back issues
1996 and prior) of which we will be subscribing to 65.
