RILO Minutes
January 12, 2001
Present: Paul Burnam, Deb Carter Peoples, Danielle Clarke, Tom Green,
Carol Hallenbeck, Carol Holliger, and Marsha Zavar
- Reference
- Paul asked everyone covering the Beeghly Reference Desk to turn
into him his or her schedule of commitments for the following
week by 5:00 P.M. each Wednesday. The information can be communicated
to him by hard copy, word-of-mouth, or email.
- Paul updated the group about the ordering of two new, Spanish-English
dictionaries, his preparation to date for the cybercheating workshop,
OhioLINK Capitol Connection workshops planned for March, and about
his inquiries regarding the installation of an additional network
connection in the Hamilton-Williams atrium.
- Tom advised the Beeghly Reference people that they not obligated
to stay for the duration of the 7:00-10:00 P.M. shift in the event
of hazardous weather conditions. If one feels that it would be
safer for him or her to leave early, that judgment will be respected.
Further discussion concluded that it would be useful to supply
Monty with librarian business cards so that he can more easily
make referrals.
- Online
- Paul conveyed news from the OhioLINK Lead Implementers
meeting of January 4, 2001. A new Compaq server was purchased
for high-volume Dataware databases such as Medline. Ownership
rights to the BRS search engine are now not presently clear. So
future enhancements may be slowed. Dataware version 6 is almost
ready for implementation. A prototype of the new OhioLINK Web
site will be released for staff testing by July 1. It will go
public in August. The National Library of Medicine is folding
the HealthSTAR, AIDSline, and CancerLIT databases back into Medline.
Reloads for PsycINFO and CINAHL are in progress. Work on the multiple-database
searching capability is ongoing. New software was purchased for
this project. The target date for public release is August 1.
Remote authentication is now supposed to be possible for all databases
except ITKnowledge. Users will have to employ the OhioLINK Web
site to connect to all the non-Dataware databases. Sanborn Maps
will be added to the content of the Digital Media Center (DMC)
by third week of January. Sanborn Maps represent 40,000 maps depicting
Ohio communities from 1867-1970. Prototype for physics experiments
videos will be ready by March. These videos will require the RealVideo
plug-in. Fulltext of journals from the Thieme, Blackwell, and
Cambridge University presses are currently be loaded into the
EJC. Blackwell Science titles will be added soon. Project Muse
will add over 200 titles in 2001.
- Information Literacy
- Danielle explained about the convoluted process involved with
trying to reserve a computer lab in which to do instruction. It
was suggested that a list of microlabs on campus be developed.
Information about how to reserve, number of workstations, availability
of a projection screen, and room lighting control should be included.
- Testing concluded on the Five Colleges of Ohio Information Literacy
tutorial. Time for public release is near at hand. All who attended
the Information Literacy Assessment Symposium at Wooster on January
9 were very positive about its content and leader. Danielle asked
that we convey to her any significant new discoveries of Web sites
about Information Literacy for linkage from the Five Colleges
Information Literacy page.
- Interlibrary Loan
- Marsha announced that there will be no further charges assessed
to faculty, students, or staff for photocopied ILL requests.
- Technical Services Liaison
- Carol informed the group that the local enterprise, The News
Shop, is closing.
She will no longer be able to purchase the daily New York Times
through them. The group was supportive of her intent to subscribe
to the hard copy of the New York Times through EBSCO.
- Other Business
- Tom distributed a sheet listing companies whose Web sites will
be accessible from the University servers for Akamai Technologies,
Inc.
- Deb reminded the group that the deadline for ALAO presentation
proposals is February 15, 2001. She suggested that we develop
presentation about the Reference Camp experience of last summer.
A group effort was suggested in order to illustrate what was said
about roving reference, academic building reference assistance,
consideration of a new Reference Desk, moving Reference workstations,
and Campus Center Reference assistance during the noon hour. Paul
agreed to compose initial draft of an abstract with Tom and Deb
providing editorial support.
Next Meeting Feburary 23, 2001 at 9:00 A.M. Green Room. Paul will
organize the agenda. Danielle will record minutes.
