RILO Meeting Minutes
10/29/99
Present: Burnam, Clarke, Derr, Green, Hallenbeck, He, Holliger, Carter
Peoples, Zavar
I. Library Director (Theresa was at Oberlin, attending a Five Colleges
of Ohio Library Directors' Meeting)
II. Reference
A. Paul will talk to Diane Manns
to set up a date for a library instruction workshop in Hayes Hall.
Danielle and Marsha will conduct two citation workshops on Wednesday,
17 November (at 4 and 7 pm)
B. Tom and Paul have gone over
the revised Reference Collection Development Policy (appendices attached
to agenda).
C. Tom has received a "Suggestions
and Comments" memo requesting that food be allowed in the library
AND that food be available for purchase in the library. This suggestion
prompted a lively discussion about the pros and cons of food in the
library. Questions which arose included: Is the current "No Food"
policy enforced by all staff members? If we did add vending machines,
in which area of the library would they be placed? If we find a suitable
place, how can we restrict food to that area only? This matter needs
further study.
III. Online
A. Tom explained that the WWW version
of CARS is an improvement over the DOS version. Unfortunately, this
new version is only available to faculty and advisors, not to staff.
It is valuable because it provides class lists on which each student
is hyperlinked. You can click on a student's hyperlink to see what
other classes he or she is taking. The link to CARS is on the Current
Student Faculty page which is the second screen from the new OWU home
page.
Tom suggested that we email Jason LaMar,
Director of Web Services, to register our complaints about the re-design
of the OWU homepage. Several people explained the calls they have
received from faculty who wondered what happened to the Library Home
Page.
B. Paul attended training in Biological
Abstracts at Denison. A representative from Biosis was the instructor.
Networking problems interrupted the session. Paul will forward printed
instructions to the rest of us when he receives them.
C. The two new webstations have been
completely hooked up to the printer in the Reference Area. Tom verified
that Adobe Acrobat has been installed on them as well.
IV. Information Literacy
Danielle reported that revised directions
resulted from her last Five Colleges of Ohio Information Literacy
Meeting at Kenyon on 20 Oct 99. The online tutorial module for which
OWU is responsible will be called an "in-depth" module and
will explain various citation formats so that students will recognize
and understand them. The module will not attempt to teach the students
complete documentation styles; that is the responsibility of the faculty,
according to the committee. Another meeting of the Online Tutorial
Workgroup will be scheduled.
V. Government Documents
A. Joy distributed a list of Full-Text Databases
which are now available as online resources in government documents.
Deb suggested that under THOMAS Joy add a brief description of this
database.
B. Joy asked the question: Should new online
government databases be listed under "Research Databases"
on the Library Home Page in addition to being listed under "Governmental
Information?" The group decided to integrate government documents
databases with our current list.
VI. Interlibrary Loan
A. Marsha will place the State Library
of Ohio notebook she has circulated to us all out at the Reference
Desk for ready reference.
B. Monday, 29 Nov 99, will be the last
day for interlibrary loan requests.
C. Helpful Hint: If a student needs
microfiche which we don't have, the State Library will produce a copy
and send it to us. The student may keep this microfiche copy.
VII. Technical Services
A. Carol Holliger brought the
multi-CD-ROM set of the National Geographic Magazine which was recently
donated by Paul Kostyu, Journalism Department. She asked for ideas
about how to prepare it for use. The group recommended putting each
CD in its own jewel case and storing them in the CD-ROM cabinet in
the Reference Area.
B. The Union List is now on the
OWU Libraries Home Page, thanks to Joy. Carol called the Delaware
County District Library and METHESCO to inform them of this fact.
VIII. Other Business: Several people expressed concern of the vast
quantity of printing paper which is being used. Several aspects of
this problem were discussed. Students help themselves to paper in
the feed tray of the laser printer to use for printing their papers
in the microlab. Carol saw a student remove paper from the microfilm
reader/printer tray on the lower level.
Students make many, many
copies-some of which they leave behind-often without a care because
there is no charge. Students have figured out a way to connect to
the Reference Area laser printer from the microlab so they can print
their papers for free rather than supply their own paper. One possible
solution was discussed: Remove the paper from the Reference Area laser
printer. Create signage to explain that students must supply their
own paper if they want to make prints. Marsha volunteered to create
a clever sign which would begin to prepare students for this new policy
which could begin at the beginning of Spring Semester.
Paul will call the Grant St. John company about the possibility of
adding a multiplexer tray to the Reference Area laser printer to enable
students to make double-sided copies. Deb suggested this logical step
in a plan to save paper.
IX. Next Meeting: Friday, 10 Dec 99 @ 9:00 am in Green Room
