Public Services Council Meeting
January 15, 1999
Present: Burnam, Clarke, Della Lana, Derr, Green, He, Hallenbeck,
Holliger, Peoples, Yates, Zavar.
I. Announcements & general information sharing
A. Chuck talked about a newsletter he created to promote services
in the AV Dept. He will distribute one to each staff member. A portable
video data projector demonstration will take place on 1-25-99 in the
AV Department.
B. Bernard informed members that new shelving units that were purchased
two years ago are finally in place.
C. Chris announced his plan to display staff book choices. See him
about your recommendations.
D. Tom created a Database list with descriptions to be distributed
to staff and faculty.
E. Tom discussed the feasibility of using DISCUS (http://192.68.223.14/discus/index.html)
for online staff discussions.
F. Paul described his Dataware II training [Gail Junion-Metz] at
OhioLINK. The training emphasized databases that will be made public
on 2-1-99. He felt that it will take time to explain the features
of the interface to our users. Staff may also need time to be brought
up to speed. Discussion ensued. Many staff persons have questions
regarding the new interface. Paul suggested accessing Kent State University's
links to about five of the databases. This help staff to gain some
familiarity with the Dataware interface. It was felt that a comprehensive
list of the databases that will be effected at OWU should be identified.
Paul volunteered to look into that matter and check with Meg Spernoga
at OhioLINK.
G. Cross-training sessions were scheduled and rescheduled as follows:
- Microform training 1-21-99 at 9:00 A.M.
- Periodical Abstracts 1-29-99 at 9:00 A.M.
- Music Branch 2-19-99 at 9:00 A.M.
- Science Branch 2-25-99 at 9:00 A.M.
II. Library intranet brainstorming.
Tom described the possibility of creating an intranet service for
library staff . Possible uses could be for postings of meetings and
events to a calendar, a link to DISCUS (discussion list), postings
of minutes, and postings of documents that require editing by several
persons. Tom volunteered to set up and supervise this service.
III. E-mail reference service planning.
Paul announced the target date for the startup of the email reference
service as 2-3-99. Paul and Joy will meet to discuss the setup of
the eudora mailboxes. Discussion ensued regarding a draft of a promotional
flyer that was prepared by Chuck, Chris, and Marsha. As a result of
Deb Peoples' suggestion, it was decided to change the email address
name of the reference desk to refdesk@cc.owu.edu. After final preparations,
the flyer will be sent to faculty.
IV. Other concerns.
Carol Holliger would like to see the inoperative vendacard machines
removed from the periodical area. Joy informed the group that the
GPO workstation prints to the laser printer, and a shortcut has been
created to Netscape. This is allows for three machines to offer web
access.
Tom suggested that this group will meet again at the end of the semester.
A meeting time will be announced.
