Collection Development Meeting Minutes
April 7, 2000

Present: Burnam, Byrd, Green, Hallenbeck, He, Holliger, Jin, Peoples, Wiesner

I. Acquisitions

Barbara reported March acquisition activity of 793 firm orders and 94 Yankee Book Peddler (YBP) slip orders. We received 650 titles and 670 volumes. 206 Historian titles were processed. Book orders for the year are up from recent years with more than 4,000 titles ordered.

II. Director

  1. Theresa noted that liaisons encumbered all funds by the deadline.
  2. There is still a small amount of money in YBP to be spent by the April 20th deadline. Xudong is now distributing the YBP slips.
  3. Theresa would like to add $20,000 to YBP next year. Liaisons are encouraged to think about this and let Theresa know your opinion.
  4. Theresa anticipates spending $227,000 on books this year.

III. Serials

  1. Carol reported that we have spent about $237,000 (with $13,000 outstanding) on print and online periodicals. We have spent $17,280 on microforms.
  2. Carol is arranging a May trial of ISI Basic for both Science and Social Science. If we decide to subscribe, these services will cost $5,875. Deb, Tom, Paul, and Joy will contact faculty to test.
  3. Carol will arrange for a trial of EBSCO Online. This may provide access to 14 e-journals not previously accessible. Joy, Tom, and Xudong are also involved in this project.
  4. After discussion about the Periodical Use Study, we decided to continue it.
  5. Theresa expressed the need for journal selection for new faculty.
  6. Are there print indexes that can be dropped? Liaisons should review print indexes for their subject areas and make recommendations. Education Index and a Geology Index were identified as needing to be reviewed.
  7. This summer a work group will examine the 50 free Highwire titles and recommend how we should handle them.
  8. Joy has added all JSTOR titles to the Web list of periodicals. Deb asked for hyperlinks for these titles. Joy proposed seeking student help this summer for this project.

IV. Technical Services

  1. Xudong shared a draft LC Classification list by liaison subject responsibility. We made some suggestions to improve this list. He will revise and distribute to liaisons for further review.
  2. Xudong recommended indicating the date you completed reading a journal rather than a simple check mark on routed journals. This may encourage faster routing of journals.

V. Collection Development

  1. Paul and Xudong will attend the Monday, April 10th, meeting of the OH5 CD Committee. To help them prepare for the determination of the JSTOR library of record, we had a general discussion about our periodical strengths. Paul, Carol, and Xudong will meet later in the afternoon to further prepare for the meeting.
  2. Xudong has started to develop a plan for the Dewey books.
  3. Theresa asked Tom to coordinate the summer review of the gift books stored in the closet on third floor.
  4. It was recommended that multiple copies of Reference titles be reviewed and placed on permanent reserve or in the stacks.
  5. The 1988-92 editions of Keesing's Record of World Events will be moved to the stacks.
  6. The 1985 edition of Academic American Encyclopedia will be removed from the stacks and disposed of.
  7. We will purchase one print copy The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians (2nd edition) for the Music Branch. We will wait to see what OhioLINK is doing before making a decision about adding the online version.
  8. We approved Theresa's recommendation to purchase the Encyclopedia of the Renaissance.

VI. Other Business

  1. Deb announced the URL and passwording for access to CORC web databases and the Dublin Core training module. This will be added to the Trial database page on the library intranet.
  2. Theresa shared information about Questia, a new resource touting 50,000 e-journals, e-books, etc. and expecting to grow to 250,000 within three years.
  3. Paul informed us about a trial version of the online Encyclopedia of the Life Sciences. This, too, will be added to the Trial database page of the library intranet.
