Computer Configurations

Hardware

There are many computer platforms, operating systems, and brands available to you on the market. Most any computer currently on the market will be capable of connecting to the OWU network.

The following list of questions may be helpful as you work with a vendor to select a computer.

  1. Does it have Windows Vista, Windows XP Professional or Macintosh OS X operating system - with sufficient processing speed, memory, and hard disk storage to support the operating system?

Recommended:

  • a processor speed equivalent to an Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GHz - or better
  • 2 GB or more of system RAM
  • 160 GB of hard drive space
  • CD-RW burner with DVD capabilities
  1. Is the computer configured to operate an Ethernet network using TCP/IP through an RJ45 port on a 10/100 network interface card (NIC)?
  • This is required for connectivity in campus housing.
  1. If the computer has a wireless card, is it Wireless B, G, or N?
  • This is required to connect to the wireless network at OWU.
  1. What type of technical support / warranty is available for the computer? Is there a toll-free number to call for support? What hours is the support available? If there is a hardware problem, does the system have to be shipped?
